Program Description:
GranadaJazz
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Join the Augustana Band on a multi-city tour through Spain that combines performance and cultural engagement. Visit cultural heritage, religious and historical sites while learning from on-site and local guides. This course, as an ensemble course, will be largely based on active participation in both rehearsals and concerts. Through participation students will demonstrate competency on learning outcomes as observed by the instructor throughout the tour in Spain.

PRIORITY DEADLINE
April 4: Complete applications will be reviewed and students will be notified of acceptance status by April 13. Some courses may fill by the priority deadline. Courses with open spaces will remain open until October 1 or until filled, whichever comes first.

COMPREHENSIVE FEE
$4,900-$5,500: Includes international airfare, all accommodation, entrance fees, guides, in-country transportation, daily breakfast, several group meals and the IPO health & safety fee (includes EIIA insurance coverage).

COURSE OBJECTIVES
AU Band
  • To provide familiarity with outstanding wind repertoire through performance, including masterworks, works by underrepresented composers, works from composers from other countries, and new music
  • To achieve the highest consistent performance standard and professionalism on an international stage
  • To apply historical and theoretical applications in the development of expression and interpretation
  • To develop each individual's artistic and technical musical development while working towards the goals for the group
  • To provide an outlet for musical expression and creativity
  • To prepare students for future careers as performers, teachers, scholars, and appreciators of music
Northlanders Jazz Band
  • Learn to perform a variety of styles of jazz music in a big band setting
  • To develop the performance skills in jazz improvisation within a historical context
  • To encourage a high level of ear training, including transcriptions
  • To learn commercial rehearsal skills in working within the big band
  • Improve skills in individual part playing and sight reading
  • Learn how to approach reading jazz literature in terms of style
  • Improve enhanced music reading skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge as a means to artistic expression
  • Improve skills as an improvise

Dr. Christopher Unger was named the 5th conductor of the Augustana Band and began his tenure at the university in September 2015. Previously, Unger was the interim director of bands at the University of British Columbia. Prior to his appointment at U.B.C., Unger served as the assistant conductor of both the Eastman Wind Orchestra and the Eastman Wind Ensemble. Unger received his D.M.A in conducting from the Eastman School of Music in 2013. Additionally, he holds degrees from the University of Western Ontario and the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Hanegan is the director of jazz studies and assistant professor of music. He directs the Northlanders Jazz Ensemble and Northlanders Jazz Combo, and teaches jazz improvisation, woodwind methods, studio saxophone and the history of jazz, blues and rock. In addition, he coordinates the annual Jazz on the Upper Great Plains Festival.
