Scholarships

Augustana University has a limited number of endowed study abroad scholarships.  These scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic merit and first time travel.  Please visit the Augustana Study Abroad Scholarship brochure for information on eligibility requirements and application deadlines.

The Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 in grants for students currently receiving a Pell Grant as part of their financial aid package.  Preference is given to students from diverse backgrounds, those pursuing semester or year-long programs, science majors, and those interested in non-traditonal locations.  1 in 3 applications are funded.  Students who receive a Pell Grant are strongly encouraged to apply!  Up to an additional $3,000 is available for students interested in pursuing study of a critical need language such as Chinese, Arabic or Russian while abroad.  Application deadlines are October 1 for spring semester study and March 1 for fall semester study.  Please see the International Programs Office for additional details.

AllTheRooms Room to Travel – Study Abroad Scholarship is offering a $1,000 award for study abroad during the 2017-18 academic year.  Watch for future award dates.

Fund for Education Abroad offers generous scholarships for semester and summer programs.  These awards are intended to support students with financial need, diverse backgrounds and first generation college students.

Scholarships for LGBTQ Students: Resource Guide & Scholarship Information

GoOverseas.com offers a variety of scholarship options for study, internships and volunteer programs.

The Freeman-ASIA scholarship, administered by the Institute for International Education (IIE), provides financial suport to American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need to study abroad for academic credit during the summer, semester or academic year in one of 15 countries/regions in East and Southeast Asia.  Award amounts range from $3,000 to $7,000 depending on the proposed length of study. 

The Boren Scholarship, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provides up to $8,000 for a summer,  $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for a full academic year abroad.  Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages and fields of study critical to US security.  Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of the US, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Summer programs must be a minimum of 8 weeks in length and are limited to science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) students.  All students applying for the Boren Scholarships are expected to have a significant language component as part of their study abroad program.

The Sons of Norway offers scholarships for students studying in Norway for a semester, year or summer.  Deadlines vary from April 1 - May 1.

The Foundation for Global Scholars has several scholarships available to assist undergraduate college students in achieving their personal goals of obtaining cultural and academic experiences throoughout the world. Funding amounts vary.

Diversity Abroad has partnered with several organizations to offer an array of study abroad grants and scholarships.  Preference is given to students who represent racial or ethnic diversity, are economically disadvantaged, are first generation college students and/or plan to study abroad in a non-traditional location (location other than western Europe or Australia/New Zealand). 

The British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) has some 500£ scholarships available for students accepted for a semester or year abroad program at numerous UK institutions including Augustana partner schools Edgehill University, University of Exeter, Lancaster University and University of Glasgow.

The Killam Undergraduate Fellowship offers a $5,000 per semester cash award to US students planning to study for a semester or year in Canada.

The Glimpse Foundation seeks talented writers, photographers and filmmakers who will be studying abroad for a minimum of 10 weeks for its correspondant program.  Each selected participant will receive a $600 grant, receive free tuition to Matador U,  obtain editorial support and career training in travel writing and photograhy, and will see their work published on MatadorNetwork.com and Glimpse.org. 

The Golden Key Scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students of high academic achievement whose study abroad program is clearly relevant to the student's major field of study.  A minimum of 5 scholarships are available annually.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides monthly stipend awards to students planning to study at a German university for a semester, summer or year.

Benjamin Franklin Travel Grant awards a stipend for studies or internship in France. Applicants must have a major or minor in French and be nominated by their host institution.

The LIVFund has a scholarship for students who want to learn, intern or volunteer (LIV) abroad in Latin America.  The fund awards up to two scholarships per month in the amount of $500.

Tortuga Backpacks mission is to help people take amazing trips, including students studying abroad. When customers purchase luggage, they are “paying it forward” by funding scholarships for semester or year-long programs. Mid-May deadline for fall semester, Mid-December deadline for spring semester.

Rotary International offers a variety of scholarships for study abroad.  Contact your local Rotary Club for details.

The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation provides travel study awards to Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts who plan to study abroad. 

Sara's Wish Foundation scholarships are awarded to extraordinary young women committed to making the world a better place.  Applicants must possess a commitment to public service, a strong record of scholarship, a history of leadership experience and a willingness to help with the ongoing work of Sara's Wish Foundation.
