Program Description:
Nursing 451:  Leadership in Professional Nursing in Ecuador

This course focuses on professional role development, nursing leadership, and contemporary issues in nursing. Students will gain increased understanding of the staff nurse's role in leadership, with opportunities for practical experience in the areas of delegation, priority setting, critical thinking, decision making, quality improvement, evidence based nursing practice, information management and safety. Students will examine leadership and management theories. Students will explore legal, ethical and political issues in nursing.

The clinical component includes clinical practicums with a nurse preceptor. The clinical experience provides an opportunity for students to integrate research, management, leadership, and ethics into their nursing practice. Students will participate in delegation, priority setting, clinical reasoning, decision making, ev
idence-based nursing, information management and safety in an approved health care setting which may include a global setting.
 
Comprehensive Fee
$4,700-$5,500: international airfare, airport transfers, lodging, site visits, all meals, in-country transportation, excursions, and an IPO Health & Safety fee (EIIA Insurance Coverage). **Recommended immunizations and anti-malarial medication are not included in these costs.**

Evaluation
Assignments will be graded using a point system and/or grading rubric.
Evaluation of student understanding of the course content will be via completion of the following:
 
  • Student Performance: Student performance for the clinical portion of the course will be based on the preceptor’s feedback and assessment of the student.
  • Quizzes: The quiz grade for this course will be comprised of quizzes posted on Moodle.
  • IHI Modules: After successfully completing the assigned IHI modules you will receive a certificate of completion.
  • Discussion Forum: A discussion forum will be part of each module. After completing the assigned readings, the student will participate in an online discussion with peers.
  • Daily Log / Intercultural Assignment: The assignment is to provide a log of the clinical hours accumulated during the preceptorship.
  • ATI Standardized Exam: All students are required to take specific standardized tests as part of the nursing curriculum.

Patricia Waltman teaches the Community Health Nursing and Leadership in Professional Nursing courses at the senior level. She conducts the international Leadership in Professional Nursing clinical experiences in Ecuador where she has established long-term partnerships. Patricia received her B.S.N. from Presentation College, her master's degree at Augustana College and is completing her DNP from Capella University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is a certified Clinical Nurse Leader.
