Passports and Visas

When do I apply for a passport?

You need to apply for a passport no later than 2 months prior to your departure date IF you don't require a visa.  If you require a visa, you need to apply for your passport no later than 4 months prior to your departure date.

How and where do I apply for a passport?  What documentation do I need to apply for a passport?

Please visit the US State Department's website for detailed instructions.  The International Programs Office is here to help with any questions you may have with this process.

What if I already have a passport?  Do I need to renew it?

Your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months after your expected return date.  If it doesn't meet this requirement, you must renew it prior to departure.

What do I do after I receive my passport?

You will be required to upload a scanned copy of the photo page of your passport in StudioAbroad prior to your departure.  You will receive email reminders about this.  There are scanners in the Library,  the International Programs Office and the Campus Life Suite that you can use for this purpose.

What is a visa?

A visa is an official document issued by the consulate of the country you will be visiting.  The visa will be placed inside your passport and gives you permission to study in the host country.  Each country has specific requirements and costs for a student visa.  Your program provider and the International Programs Office can help you organize these details.

Do I need a visa?

Some programs do require a visa.  Upon acceptance into your program, you will be notified by the program provider whether you need to apply for a visa.  While your program provider will provide you with guidance, applying for a visa is your responsibility.  Visa requirements may differ depending on your country of citizenship.  It is your responsibility to check the visa requirements of the country in which you wish to study.

How do I apply for a visa?

Visa application processes vary from country to country.  Check the consulate website for the country you plan to visit for current requirements.  Some countries require an in-person interview as part of the visa application. This will require a trip to the nearest consulate (typically in Chicago).  The visa application process can be quite complex, so it is important to inform yourself and plan ahead.
